RAILHAZER - the Null and the Void

Railhazer hails from Saint Louis, Missouri and is;

Derek Bonn - Drums
Dave Kreher - Guitar
Jordan Ross - Guitar
Steve Sesti - Bass
Matt Mathias - Vox

Opening with a short burst of feedback (New God) before dropping a dissonant sludge riff, one could be forgiven for thinking that The Null And The Void a first full release by Railhazer is going to turn out to be just another Grief / Eyehategod clone, but the more you pick the scabrous crust of sludge apart, you find small pockets of other genres you wouldn't normally find on a 'sludge' album. Gasp, shock, horror, there are even guitar solo's loitering with intent here and there, and not just bluesy , New Orleans based solo's either, but some have a Gothic tinge that you would expect to hear from a melodic doom death band. In fact, I would go as far as to say that there are more hooks on here than a porno grind band's album cover.

At the moment, I am listening to the track 'The Mountain.' It could, just about, be confused with an early Metallica ballad. Now, the leaden doom riffs of 'Mass of a Thousand Suns' darkens the room with clouds of ominous intent.

With The Null And The Void, Railhazer has created an album diverse enough to make it an absorbing listen, whilst remaining within the constraints an extremely heavy album requires, so as not to alienate those of us who feed off the intensity that bands such as Railhazer, create.

APORYA - Dead Men Do Not Suffer

With the baroque, mournful opener, 'Blood Rain' 'Dead Men Do Not Suffer' an album by Brazilian melodic doom death band Aporya  begins exactly as expected, until the first surprise kicks in, the second track 'Cry Of The Butterfly.' There's nothing 'Gothic' about this track, the black laced veil is ripped away in a Strapping Young lad blend of rampant riffery.

However, Aporya is essentially a band burdened with angst and melancholy, and the weight on its shoulders soon drags the tempo down again to just above snail's pace. The many guitar solo's cry crystalline tears of sorrow, enhanced by an excellent mix that draws the pain into your marrow. The clever use of keyboards, used sparingly so not to distract from the crunch of the riffs, creates an atmosphere that has you brushing imaginary cobwebs from your face and helps elevate the band just beyond the gloom of funeral doom.

The closing tracks, the gloriously haunting 'Pain and Loneliness' which sounds like  the funeral doom band Worship dipped in honey, and the title track 'Dead Men Do Not Suffer' are the lamentations of the recently bereaved before the coffin lid finally shuts.

You can find this album on the Narcoleptica Productions Bandcamp page.It shows two tracks for $2, but pay it and you receive all seven.

SAPATA - Satanibator

Sapata - 'Satanibator'

What the band says: Sapata, known before as Satanibator, is a Finnish doom rock band from Tempere and formed in 2014. Their debut album'Satanibator' was recorded in Suomenlinnan Studio with Producer Mauri Syrjälä and it will be released on June 2nd via Inverse Records

Sapata, the dancing dead from old temples. It's a word from mouths of ancient kings. Sapata is stories and soundwaves of joy and death, life and pain, and depression. It is a mystic and beautiful ceremony to love and death.

Members - Saara Samane, TT Sousalo, Felix Voltti, Anttu Puutio

What The Shrieks From Below says - Sapata's 'Satanibator', a sarcophagus of beguiling laments for a lost love, maybe a Princess yearning for the hand of a commoner, someone she cannot have, wanting to be someone she cannot be. Somewhat fanciful maybe, particularly for a blog which usually treads a darker path, but nonetheless an image that can't be avoided once the vocals of Saara Samane bewitches you with her tales of anguish. To say her voice is powerful is something of an understatement and reminds me of the style of Suzanne Sledge of the band 68-75.

The bear pit that stoner doom bands frequently fall into, is one where a (female) front person overly dominates the sound of the rest of the band, and for those of us who crave the slow, granite riffs of that particular genre, that's a particular no, no, right kids? Fortunately, Sapata manages  to harness this particular powerhouse, the rest of the band creating mythical threads of ancient jams, sometimes bringing the hammer down hard, sometimes creating crystalline, emotive, sacrificial chimes to the Egyptian God, Horus.

'Satanibator' is an album I have been listening to continuously for a couple of weeks , and it still lifts me every time I play it. An album fit for the old kingdom, and the crowning of a Pharoah.

BØG - Jim

BØG - Jim

Like the putrefying, bloated carcass of a humongous sea creature lolling around in the surf, so BØG are rolling in on a purulent tide of blackened ooze.

Don't expect joy, or hope, only suffering, from five tracks of low end oppressive torment, made all the more painful by a surprisingly crisp and effective sound. All of the instruments have been tuned to deliver the final Coup de Grace, while the vocals perform an exorcism on our very souls.

With 'Jim' BØG has produced an album of quality, blackened  horror, riffs allowed to skitter about like a hellish horde, driving you into the corral of doom, before ripping you apart.

Released June 10th

CONTRA - Deny Everything

Contra  - Deny Everything

"CONTRA was formed as an instrumental 3-piece by former SOFA KING
KILLER guitarist, Chris Chiera, and ex- RUE drummer, Aaron Brittain. After briefly playing together in another local outfit, they sought to start their own band and enlisted the aid of SO LONG ALBATROSS bassist, Adam Horwatt. Except rather than just having a bassist, the band decided on a different approach and adopted a two guitarist format, albeit with Adam playing 4-string baritone guitar.
CONTRA quickly wrote and recorded the "Son of Beast" demo and began a steady schedule of playing to great acclaim locally. However, CONTRA wanted to add another layer to their potent mix of metal, blues, rock, and sludge by asking vocalist Larry Brent to join their ranks. Larry had previously contributed vocals to local hardcore stalwarts DON AUSTINTHE UNHOLY THREE, and SPLINTER, in addition to the Laughing Hyenas-influenced HATCHET JOB. After only three shows, Larry began recording vocals to eight of the ten tracks of what will be CONTRA's debut album."
SHRIEKS COMMENTS -  A difficult to pin down to any specific genre type of band, unless of course there is a genre called 'heavy as shit' Contra are set to release their follow up to the 'Son Of A Beast EP, shipping begins on 1/7/2017.
Straddling most types of extreme, metal, be it doom, sludge, hardcore or stoner, the album 'Deny Everything' is underpinned by a fairly simple beat. Don't think for one minute that is detrimental to the album however, because what it does is create a stomping, angry, in your face, yet surprisingly accessible form of aural thuggery. The production is crisp and clear, embellishing the galloping, chunky riffs careering throughout 'Deny Everything.'
As dangerous and menacing as the Kray Twins patrolling their manor...staring at you straight in the eye!

THE SHRIEKS FROM BELOW VOL 54 - Black Cloud All Dayer Tribute

The Shrieks From Below Podcast Show - Core Of Destruction each Saturday @ 3pm EST, 9pm CET and 8pm UK.

A tribute to a show I attended on 6/5/2017 at the Rebellion Bar in Manchester UK. This was one of the finest gigs I've attended for some time. Huge thank you's should go to Frenchie and Daffyd for putting on this show and keeping an excellent, varied line up despite various bands dropping out, including headliners Esoteric. Also a special mention to opening act Ba'al whose brand of post sludge will carry them beyond the realm of opening acts.

Band Order:

Petrichor - 'This Too Must Die'

Tides Of Sulfur - 'Lord Of Flies'

Tides Of Sulfur - 'Maltheist'

Groak - 'Notebook'

Khost - 'Hypocrisy, Banality, Possession'

EL COLOSSO - Pathways

El Colosso - Melbourne, Australia

Hurtling into town, shooting shit up and terrorizing the townsfolk, the four dust storms that make up El Colosso are set to release their follow up to last years EP 'Cannonball' The album is called 'Pathways' and comprises of seven tracks of blistering metal.

'Pathways' is an album that brings a smile to your face, its evident that  El Colosso, had a lot of fun making this record, as 'Pathways' showcases a band at the top of their game, delivering songs of glorious swagger, encapsulated by moments of emotive reflection, particularly with  the monumental solo's that make up most of the track 'Moving Mountains' there is a maturity here that belies the fact that this is El Colosso's debut album.

......but beware, 'Pathways' is a rattlesnake of a disc, spitting riffs and venomous, southern style licks throughout, this bites down hard and doesn't let go.

An essential purchase.
