Laurasia Awaits Us - "The first album of  Laurasia Awaits Us. A concept about  personal feelings of depression and how it alienates a person from his surroundings. The album has lots of heavy and dark moments, but also glimpses of hope in the atmosphere, creating a more relatable and accessible album. Instead of using artistic metaphors, the lyrics are mostly down to earth and straightforward, even though the element of beliefs about afterlife and spirituality are present"

ShEver - "ShEver is all about a sludgy brew of death doom. Heaviness. Crushing riffs, crawling rhythm, hate drenched vocals and a melody that creates  unique trance inducing atmosphere"

Bloodbath - " A Swedish death metal supergroup"

Burn Ritual - "San Antonio doom metal band"

Blues Funeral - "Blues Funeral is a blend of 60's and 70's inspired rock with a metal twist. Riffs, solo's, groove and swirling hammond organ abound.

Eternal Black - "Eternal Black is a doom band based out of Brooklyn NY. Steeped in the American doom tradition of Saint Vitus, The Obsessed, Spirit Caravan and Eyehategod, Eternal Black's music is full of heavy and bluesy riffs, Bonham-esque drums and rumbling, low end"

Blues Funeral - 'Awakening'

So we're a year on from Blues Funeral's 'The Search' and the Time Lords have awoken from their cryogenic slumber once again, to give us another demonstration of what a 70's style proto rock release should sound like.

'Awakening' sees Blues Funeral far more comfortable in its own skin, confident in the knowledge that the band had excelled in what they wanted to achieve with 'The Search.' With that album it was obvious that the band were trying REALLY hard to emulate the heavy rock sound of the pre NWOBHM days, so much so that it felt like 'The Search' was running the risk of falling apart at the seams, such were the myriad of ideas thrown into each song. To the bands credit, it didn't and it became a prime example of how to take an snapshot of music from a completely different era, done to death by numerous clones, and keep it fresh and thoroughly enjoyable to the listener.

With 'Awakening' Blues Funeral has produced an album that is far more relaxed than it's predecessor, each track seamlessly, and smoothly melds into the next. The instruments, endlessly vying for dominance on 'The Search' are allowed to compliment one another on 'Awakening', given chance to breathe, which in turn means that guitar, drums, vocals and bass and organ, are joyously entwined in a tango of glorious, prog enriched rock.

For comparison, the nearest recent release is the self titled album by Necromandus. What makes 'Awakening' so different is the diversity and willingness to experiment. The metal thread that was prominent throughout 'The Search' has been blunted a little, but stepping up to the plate we have the glowing twin guitar licks of Maurice Eggenschwiler, and Jan Kimmel, enriched by an accompaniment of swirling organ, more prominent here than on 'The Search.'

To sum up what 'Awakening' by Blues Funeral means to the modern rock scene that hankers after the vintage glory of the great late 60's,early 70's, their first release 'The Search' resuscitated the  corpse of overblown progressive hard rock, 'Awakening' however has it dancing a jig.

THE SHRIEKS FROM BELOW SHOW VOL 65 - Core of Destruction radio 5/8/2017

The Shrieks From Below Show, playing on Core of Destruction Radio each Saturday @ 2pm CST, 3pm EST, 9 pm CET, 8pm UK.

Lots of new and unreleased songs today, and the usual mix of the forgotten and the waiting to be discovered. Doom, stoner, sludge and good old heavy metal, plus a rare ballad thrown in for good measure.

Thank you's this week goes to:

Jon Cox of The Asound
Jesse Vengrove of Glacier
Roberto Mura of Third I Rex Label
Stephen of The Stone Eye
C Rage records for Space Cadaver
Byron Muller of Kings of Improv

Band Order

The Asound - North Carolina doom, stoner, sludge

Glacier - " Formed in Boston in 2012, Glacier is a five piece instrumental band, whose music fully embodies their name, a crushingly loud and unrelenting force.

Row of Ashes - " This debut collection of songs share a tense atmosphere which all vary dramatically in dynamics. Owing as much to a Phil Spector style wall of undulating apocalyptic noise channelled through stack amps, as to the emotional honesty of T.S Elliot's Wasteland, it could be the sonic equivalent of watching a storm develop, destroy everything around you and finally assessing the devastation once it has passed."

Miss Lava - " The album, 'Sonic Debris' witnesses the band exploring new sonic landscapes and an open and inclusive creative process. Throughout, they design explosive sound textures,  get high on psychedelic asteroids and unleash obscure beasts. The album is a sonic voyage with a diversity beyond anything yet evidenced by the band."

The Stone Eye - " Alternative/fuzzy rock duo from Philadelphia. Catchy, fuzz filled rock without a label."

Ossasstorium - " Lithuanian death metal band"

Fattura Della Morte - Australian doom/sludge

Space Cadaver - "3-piece post metal from the blackest holes of outer space"

Kings of Improg - " Is an instrumental, progressive rock band hailing from Benoni, East of Johannesburg, South Africa. The band has been together since 2012 and blends an eclectic mix of genres from hard alternative rock, to progressive metal with blues, jazz and reggae influences, with everything in between, often describing themselves as a progressive, psychedelic, instrumental, blues rock jam band."

Montanas - " Montanas is a sludge metal band from Argentina"

Stone Angels - "Stone Angels was born from tragedy."

Black Capricorn - " Doom metal from Italy"

Psychotic.Goblin King are a death 'n' roll quartet from London, founded in 2017, Goblin King bring you thundering guitars, harrowing cries and all forms of controversial that would make Immortan Joe proud. GIDRAH - "Portland sludge metal from the furthest reaches of space"

'Harmonic Tremors' (2007) and 'Bird of Prey' (2008). Now 5 years later, the band has re-emerged with ' Savage Masters' their most aggressive and straightforward release to date."

CYANIC - " The long awaited debut full length from Cyanic 'Litanies of Lust Unholy'  crushes through twelve tracks with wave after wave of relentless satanic violence. Raging, brutal, blackened death metal with no breakdowns, no sweeps, only total blasting hatred. For fans of 1349, Cannibal Corpse, Mortician.

CULTES DES GHOULES - Coven, Or Evil Ways Instead of Love

Cultes Des Ghoules - Coven, Or Evil Ways Instead of Love

Ok, so, confession time. Up until a couple of months ago, I had totally ignored Cultes Des Ghoules, due to a bigoted attitude to black metal, but boy how I would have kicked myself if I had missed out on a piece of music that would have been my top album of 2016 if I hadn't been so bigoted about black metal.

'Coven, Or Evil Ways Instead of love' is a lycanthropic symphony for the disturbed, the cold caress from the talon of the withered old crone, before suddenly shrieking like a banshee cursing you to hell. With this album, Cultes Des Ghoules, has purveyed a sense of unease. It's like meeting the stare of a psychopath and realising that there really is nothing in the eyes except bad intentions.

At 100 minutes long, there or there about, 'Coven, Or Evil Ways Instead of Love' is a monster of an album that demands you listen to it in its entirety in one sitting so as to become enthralled by this ceremony of the damned. There is a conceptual flow to this album that reminds me of Sabbat's  'Dreamweaver'  but not so much a story, rather a perpetual nightmare, an adorcism for spectral beings that dwell in the darkest of shadows.

With each track a sacrament to the sickness that pervades in the very best underground metal genres, be it the poltergeist mischief of black metal, or the dank oppression of doom / death,Coven, or Evil Ways Instead of Love, should lie, buried in unconsecrated ground, a driven stake splitting its black heart.

THE SHRIEKS FROM BELOW PODCAST SHOW ~ Core of Destruction Radio 22/7/2017

The Shrieks From Below, Playing on Core of Destruction Radio each Saturday @2pm CST, 3pm EST, 9pm CET, 8pm UK

Band order :

Decay Of Reality. "There are no healthy and happy, there are non-examined and happily ignorant." This is the ideology of death metal band Decay of Reality that issued two demos in 2012. Both demos were recorded in Primordial Studio well known for their work with the avant- garde of Russian funeral death/doom. Decay of Reality deals with psychogenic disorders, manias, phobias, and borderline states of mind.

Black Thyria was formed in 2014. The four members were known from band projects Schafott, Stonehead, Venatoris, Panzerkreuzer and Steelclad. The music of Black Thyria contains styles such as death, black, doom and heavy metal.

Void Cruiser Has always been there. Only now, the crew have awakened from their cryogenic sleep and they are on a holy quest, a quest for groove and The Massive Resonance. Those who follow will find glory and rewards indescribable with mere words.

Atomic Vulture. Conceived in 2011, Atomic Vulture is an instrumental 3 piece stone/space rock outfit from Belgium. They sound old school, dusty, and they rock like the centre of the Sun. Heavy, swirling grooves, thunderous driving beats and some seriously hot bass lines. Their tracks have a nice atmosphere often swinging between fuzzed out grooves and a more ambient style not forgetting to add some psyched, or even doom aesthetics from time to time.

Koloss Heavy, dark tones and beautiful, melancholic and melodic passages is what defines the sound of Koloss. The lyrics are often portraying an apocalyptic world. The vision is the future, the message is that change  is necessary for our  and our precious Earth's survival.

Kingsnake. Formed in 2006 out of the ashes of a band formerly known as Sugar Daddie. Their sound reflects the hard work and honesty that the members pour into their music. They are true masters of their craft.

Unravel. Death metal influenced hardcore/punk

Strange Broue. Turn on, tune in, drop out.

Lonkkavika. Metal, doom crust,sludge,Finland

Nomadic Rituals. 3 piece sludge/doom metal outfit from Belfast, Northern Ireland

Dolmenn. Is a band which is characterized by the fusion of different  musical influences from stoner, doom and metal genres. Dolmenn's sound reminds those prehistoric  dolmens, hard and heavy, which were used by pagan's to worship gods.

ATOMIC TRIP - Strike # 1

Atomic Trip - Strike # 1

Like a stoned colossus slowly being sucked under the mire, Atomic Trip unleashes two songs, each nearly twenty minutes in length. Oppressive, hypnotic doom that has just hit the sweet spot, slow, but stopping just short of being labelled drone and potentially boring the hell out of everyone. This is Sleep , their groove and swagger  supplanted by an immovable force of extra dissonance, almost Bismuth like, but with a warmth to the sound rather than the bleak drones of the Nottingham band.

Each, drawn out chord, is encapsulated with a veil of heaving discordance as hypnotic as it is painful, self flagellation by sledgehammer. Fortunately, the occasional break into psychedelic licks prevents Strike #1 from becoming tedious and prevents the listener from becoming victim to sensory overload, but ultimately one can't help the feeling of being swept aside by the Hand Of God , then trampled underfoot.

Worship at the Sepulchre of doom!

Kemerov - FMKD

"Kemerov, are from Serres, Greece and are the brainchild of two guys, vocalist Matt Karampalios and guitarist Giogos Tsapkinis, who grew up listening to old school death metal, Black Sabbath and their devotees, but could never really choose between the metal sound and the rock n' roll feeling. Equally inspired by bands like Entombed, Cathedral and Turbonegro among others, they eventually decided to put everything into the mix, merging the brutality of death metal with the groove of sludge and garage rock. The Line up is completed by Tasos Diamantidis on drums and Spiros Diamantidis on bass and the quartet self released a four track EP in late 2015, which received positive reviews from various publications and allowed them to play live with bands like Sodom, Rotting Christ, Septic Flesh and Jucifer."

Ok, first off, looking at that list of influences and bands that Kemerov has played with, you be right in thinking that the band is a death, sludge, behemothic monster.

What FMKD gives you is an intravenous infusion of garage riffs straight into the auditory canal. You can just imagine the band on stage, legs akimbo, punching out power chords, reminiscent of The Clash, or The Ramones maybe, particularly with the opener ' New Order' There is a huge, punk attitude here, more so than Kemerov's earlier EP. This is more relaxed, the band has fixated on a particular direction, and stuck to it, rattling off song after song in true death'n'roll fashion, occasionally  dropping the pace slightly and garnishing their sound with a stoner vibe (Gargoyle Keep).

So, no Entombed, or Black Sabbath here, just a fine selection of grooving, garage punk, played fast, and loose with no constraints, just how this type of music should be played.

GRAND HEAD - Melting the Fuse

With riffs hewn from granite, blasted from bedrock, then sandblasted right back into your face, so Grand Head's latest avalanche, Melting The Fuse careers onto Bandcamp.

Not latching onto any particular genre, this four track EP preaches a fuzz drenched gospel to bands like Melvins and Harvey Milk. Rules are broken, and releases like this often sound as though they are held together by musical duct tape, not so with Grand Head. The structure within the four tracks on Melting The Fuse are as unpredictable as a hobo protecting his last shot of meths, but ultimately the album manages to bulldoze its way into your skull, with raw, abrasive, punky blues tainted sludge riffs demanding you pay attention as each chord thuds into your solar plexus.

Melting The Fuse by Grand Head, is a melting pot of anger and turmoil. A requiem to the impoverished, and the down and out.

THE SHRIEKS FROM BELOW VOL 61 - Core of Destruction Radio 8/7/2017

The Shrieks From Below, as played on Core of Destruction Radio each Saturday @3pm EST, 2pm CST, 9pm EST, 8pm UK.

This weekends episode is very much light and shade. After opening with the psych/stoner vibes of Uzala and the melodic, gothic doom of Les Memoires Fall, the show becomes bathed in the shimmering light of Lamaglama, and the funk tinged Karnival Korpus, before spiralling back into the darkness of Behemoth. The darkness/light rollercoaster continues with Craang, and a gentle jam by Soul Thief. Death metal rises again with a pummelling track from Raped Ape. I always try and keep up to date with the new stuff, and Shroud Eater slate that particular with a song off their new release Strike The Sun. I'm ending the show with classic Anathema, and something off Serenades.

As always, thank you to Jadd of Magnetic Eye Records

and STB Records -

Billy Crystal Meth ~ Meth Metal

From their beginnings in 2005 until the band's demise in 2009, Billy Crystal Meth only came close to fulfilling their potential with this, their only full length release that was sandwiched between two split releases, the first with Doktor Bitch, the second with Grand Old Lady

Meth Metal, gives us sludgy, instrumental sludge with heavy doom passages, that isn't original, but plods along at a slightly higher tempo than the usual sludge bands, and there are chunky passages that sound like a death metal bands breakdowns, which I happen to love. However, one can't help but hanker for something a little more....this band was crying out for a vocalist, as Meth Metal, sounds a little tedious without someone growling out the lyrics. There is one thing that really annoys me about this album, why, oh why, do bands record a track, in this case  the twenty seven minute  long 'Frostillicus' open it in a positive fashion, and then cover at least half of it in ambient noise. That aside, there is still plenty here to go at as all of the other tracks are full and heavy.

Oh yes! Meth Metal and the two splits are available for free download via Bandcamp.
