THE SHRIEKS FROM BELOW PODCAST SHOW ~ Core of Destruction Radio 22/7/2017

The Shrieks From Below, Playing on Core of Destruction Radio each Saturday @2pm CST, 3pm EST, 9pm CET, 8pm UK

Band order :

Decay Of Reality. "There are no healthy and happy, there are non-examined and happily ignorant." This is the ideology of death metal band Decay of Reality that issued two demos in 2012. Both demos were recorded in Primordial Studio well known for their work with the avant- garde of Russian funeral death/doom. Decay of Reality deals with psychogenic disorders, manias, phobias, and borderline states of mind.

Black Thyria was formed in 2014. The four members were known from band projects Schafott, Stonehead, Venatoris, Panzerkreuzer and Steelclad. The music of Black Thyria contains styles such as death, black, doom and heavy metal.

Void Cruiser Has always been there. Only now, the crew have awakened from their cryogenic sleep and they are on a holy quest, a quest for groove and The Massive Resonance. Those who follow will find glory and rewards indescribable with mere words.

Atomic Vulture. Conceived in 2011, Atomic Vulture is an instrumental 3 piece stone/space rock outfit from Belgium. They sound old school, dusty, and they rock like the centre of the Sun. Heavy, swirling grooves, thunderous driving beats and some seriously hot bass lines. Their tracks have a nice atmosphere often swinging between fuzzed out grooves and a more ambient style not forgetting to add some psyched, or even doom aesthetics from time to time.

Koloss Heavy, dark tones and beautiful, melancholic and melodic passages is what defines the sound of Koloss. The lyrics are often portraying an apocalyptic world. The vision is the future, the message is that change  is necessary for our  and our precious Earth's survival.

Kingsnake. Formed in 2006 out of the ashes of a band formerly known as Sugar Daddie. Their sound reflects the hard work and honesty that the members pour into their music. They are true masters of their craft.

Unravel. Death metal influenced hardcore/punk

Strange Broue. Turn on, tune in, drop out.

Lonkkavika. Metal, doom crust,sludge,Finland

Nomadic Rituals. 3 piece sludge/doom metal outfit from Belfast, Northern Ireland

Dolmenn. Is a band which is characterized by the fusion of different  musical influences from stoner, doom and metal genres. Dolmenn's sound reminds those prehistoric  dolmens, hard and heavy, which were used by pagan's to worship gods.

ATOMIC TRIP - Strike # 1

Atomic Trip - Strike # 1

Like a stoned colossus slowly being sucked under the mire, Atomic Trip unleashes two songs, each nearly twenty minutes in length. Oppressive, hypnotic doom that has just hit the sweet spot, slow, but stopping just short of being labelled drone and potentially boring the hell out of everyone. This is Sleep , their groove and swagger  supplanted by an immovable force of extra dissonance, almost Bismuth like, but with a warmth to the sound rather than the bleak drones of the Nottingham band.

Each, drawn out chord, is encapsulated with a veil of heaving discordance as hypnotic as it is painful, self flagellation by sledgehammer. Fortunately, the occasional break into psychedelic licks prevents Strike #1 from becoming tedious and prevents the listener from becoming victim to sensory overload, but ultimately one can't help the feeling of being swept aside by the Hand Of God , then trampled underfoot.

Worship at the Sepulchre of doom!

Kemerov - FMKD

"Kemerov, are from Serres, Greece and are the brainchild of two guys, vocalist Matt Karampalios and guitarist Giogos Tsapkinis, who grew up listening to old school death metal, Black Sabbath and their devotees, but could never really choose between the metal sound and the rock n' roll feeling. Equally inspired by bands like Entombed, Cathedral and Turbonegro among others, they eventually decided to put everything into the mix, merging the brutality of death metal with the groove of sludge and garage rock. The Line up is completed by Tasos Diamantidis on drums and Spiros Diamantidis on bass and the quartet self released a four track EP in late 2015, which received positive reviews from various publications and allowed them to play live with bands like Sodom, Rotting Christ, Septic Flesh and Jucifer."

Ok, first off, looking at that list of influences and bands that Kemerov has played with, you be right in thinking that the band is a death, sludge, behemothic monster.

What FMKD gives you is an intravenous infusion of garage riffs straight into the auditory canal. You can just imagine the band on stage, legs akimbo, punching out power chords, reminiscent of The Clash, or The Ramones maybe, particularly with the opener ' New Order' There is a huge, punk attitude here, more so than Kemerov's earlier EP. This is more relaxed, the band has fixated on a particular direction, and stuck to it, rattling off song after song in true death'n'roll fashion, occasionally  dropping the pace slightly and garnishing their sound with a stoner vibe (Gargoyle Keep).

So, no Entombed, or Black Sabbath here, just a fine selection of grooving, garage punk, played fast, and loose with no constraints, just how this type of music should be played.

GRAND HEAD - Melting the Fuse

With riffs hewn from granite, blasted from bedrock, then sandblasted right back into your face, so Grand Head's latest avalanche, Melting The Fuse careers onto Bandcamp.

Not latching onto any particular genre, this four track EP preaches a fuzz drenched gospel to bands like Melvins and Harvey Milk. Rules are broken, and releases like this often sound as though they are held together by musical duct tape, not so with Grand Head. The structure within the four tracks on Melting The Fuse are as unpredictable as a hobo protecting his last shot of meths, but ultimately the album manages to bulldoze its way into your skull, with raw, abrasive, punky blues tainted sludge riffs demanding you pay attention as each chord thuds into your solar plexus.

Melting The Fuse by Grand Head, is a melting pot of anger and turmoil. A requiem to the impoverished, and the down and out.

THE SHRIEKS FROM BELOW VOL 61 - Core of Destruction Radio 8/7/2017

The Shrieks From Below, as played on Core of Destruction Radio each Saturday @3pm EST, 2pm CST, 9pm EST, 8pm UK.

This weekends episode is very much light and shade. After opening with the psych/stoner vibes of Uzala and the melodic, gothic doom of Les Memoires Fall, the show becomes bathed in the shimmering light of Lamaglama, and the funk tinged Karnival Korpus, before spiralling back into the darkness of Behemoth. The darkness/light rollercoaster continues with Craang, and a gentle jam by Soul Thief. Death metal rises again with a pummelling track from Raped Ape. I always try and keep up to date with the new stuff, and Shroud Eater slate that particular with a song off their new release Strike The Sun. I'm ending the show with classic Anathema, and something off Serenades.

As always, thank you to Jadd of Magnetic Eye Records

Billy Crystal Meth ~ Meth Metal

From their beginnings in 2005 until the band's demise in 2009, Billy Crystal Meth only came close to fulfilling their potential with this, their only full length release that was sandwiched between two split releases, the first with Doktor Bitch, the second with Grand Old Lady

Meth Metal, gives us sludgy, instrumental sludge with heavy doom passages, that isn't original, but plods along at a slightly higher tempo than the usual sludge bands, and there are chunky passages that sound like a death metal bands breakdowns, which I happen to love. However, one can't help but hanker for something a little more....this band was crying out for a vocalist, as Meth Metal, sounds a little tedious without someone growling out the lyrics. There is one thing that really annoys me about this album, why, oh why, do bands record a track, in this case  the twenty seven minute  long 'Frostillicus' open it in a positive fashion, and then cover at least half of it in ambient noise. That aside, there is still plenty here to go at as all of the other tracks are full and heavy.

Oh yes! Meth Metal and the two splits are available for free download via Bandcamp.
