DEAD BY DAWN - Life is a Death Sentence (2011)

Dead By Dawn, Portland, Oregon

Tightly controlled groove, riffs lined up like carcasses hung from a butchers shop window. A ground zero of crunchy sludge laced with punk rawness.

Personally, I reckon the frequent sludge tag  Dead By Dawn is tarnished with is a little off the mark. Sure, the opening track 'Life is a Death Sentence' has a whiff of Eyehategod, but much of the remainder of the album lacks the sloppiness that true sludge bands drown the listeners ears with. Here, riffs chop down around you polluted with the growling vocals of Eddie, ensuring the album sounds cloaked in a layer of grime and gives it a suitably dreary feeling.

'Life is a Death Sentence' is perfect for those who want to dip their toes into the sludge bucket, but not dive in head first.
